You Don’t Need To Knock Down Walls To Create More Space In Your Home

When it comes to making a big impact, we often think the best thing to do is completely change the layout of our homes. Before you’ve even finished saying the word “renovation”, you’re already planning on which walls you’ll knock down to create your perfect home. Knocking everything down may be the easiest thing to do, but it is also the most expensive route to take. But if you don’t want to knock down walls, that doesn’t mean you need to settle for a space you don’t love. You can transform your home and still leave the rooms right where they are—it all comes down to how you decorate to create the illusion of space.

Rearrange Your Furniture

It may seem like a simple solution but sometimes rearranging your furniture can really open up a room. Think about experimenting with angles and placing furniture on a diagonal — this will help lead your eyes smoothly around the room. Use different kinds of lighting throughout a room to brighten up dark corners and keep furniture away from windows and entryways — this immediately makes a room look bigger. Think about hanging your art lower than you think it should be — this creates the illusion of higher ceilings.

Invest in Area Rugs

The right rug can completely reinvigorate - even elevate - a space instantly. Regardless of the room size, opt for a larger rug because it makes any room feel bigger, roomier, and a little more luxurious. Look for a style of area rug that has movement throughout, it will keep the eye moving around the room which will give you the illusion of more space. And finally, opt for area rugs made of high-quality materials - I always recommend hand-knotted rugs because of their quality and durability.

Go Monochromatic

Resist the urge to buy everything in a single shade of white. Let me explain. Much like how in fashion where varying textures and tones of the single color instantly elevates your outfit – the same applies in home décor. The key is to pair different textures and different tones of a single color, so the space feels elevated - and doesn’t fall flat in presence. The best part is the trick applies to all colors. We’re especially appreciating Beiges, Greens and Navy right now.

Still want to knock a wall down?

If you’ve tried all of these tricks and still feel like you need more space, then you’ll want to work with an interior designer who can help you determine how to make the most of your space. Knocking down a wall or two is a great option and if that’s what works best for you and your home, go for it!
