How To Uncover Your Own Taste
How To Uncover Your Own Taste
As an interior design professional, I am no stranger to helping people find their personal taste. So, let’s dig into a few ways that you can determine your own decor aesthetic.
Start a Pinterest board
If ever there was a social network designed to uncover your tastes, it was Pinterest. Spend some time digging through the hundreds of billions of images on Pinterest and see what inspires you. Create a board and pin everything that resonates with you as you are scrolling. As you go along, you will start to see trends and patterns, and your personal style will start to emerge.
Take look at your home
Looking at your own home is a great place to start when it comes to your personal style. Everything in your home was put there consciously, so take note of what you love in your home and what you might want to replace. When you identify what pieces you like, determine what it is about that piece that draws you to it. And vice versa, ask yourself what it is that you don’t like about the pieces you’ve decided might need to be replaced. By looking at what you already love in your home, you can start to distill your style.
This or that?
You can ask yourself a few simple “this-or-that” questions that can help you pinpoint your style preferences.
Past or present? If you gravitate towards “past” consider looking at traditional, french country, and contemporary styles. If you answer “present” take a look at modern, Scandinavian, and eclectic styles.
City or country? If you gravitate towards “city” consider looking at modern, Scandinavian, and contemporary styles. If you answer “present” take a look at rustic, coastal, and french country styles.
Color or neutrals? If you gravitate towards “color” consider looking at traditional, eclectic, and contemporary styles. If you answer “neutral” take a look at modern, Scandinavian, and coastal styles.
Find a statement piece that resonates with you
Have you ever seen something in a store that just spoke volumes to you? Maybe it was a lamp, a rug, a frame, or even a small piece of furniture. You knew you needed to have it. The next time that happens, buy it—that is your anchor piece, and you will be able to start decorating a room around that piece of furniture.
Look in your closet
For most of us, the first place our personal style comes out is in our clothing choices. Do you love bold patterns or neutrals? Is your style out there or more conservative? What does your wardrobe say about you? Tap into that and find ways to translate it into your decor style— remember, your wardrobe is a great example of your and your style.
Create a mood board
Not the digital kind of person? Do you do better with things that you can touch and feel? An inperson mood board may be the way for you to visualize the styles you love. Print things off the internet, pull from design magazines, use images from your own camera roll or even add scrapes of fabric that speak to you—you have the flexibility to use whatever you want.
Design a small space
If you are unsure of where to start, all you need is a small space in your home—think end table, small shelf, or entryway table. Grab a few objects from around your house like a framed photo, books, small plant, vase or artwork—anything that brings you joy. Arrange the items in a way that is aesthetically pleasing to you and after living with it for a while, if you are still enamored with it you can extend that style throughout your home.
Don’t limit yourself
You might have gone through all these steps and realized that there isn’t one style that you fit into. Instead, you may identify with more than one style. And guess what? That is totally fine! Not only is it fine, but it is actually a great thing—mixing styles is a great way to elevate your overall design style.
