Design Tips | How to choose the right lighting
When it comes to lighting in a home there is so much more to consider than simply adding a few fixtures to, well, add light. Lighting can have a direct effect on your mood, it can transform the atmosphere of a space as well as add varying elements to the overall design – just to name a few. It is so important to consider the varying aspects lighting has in your home before settling on those drab pendants for task lighting or choosing that wow-factor chandelier that overcrowds the entry.
Here are some tips to consider for each space in your home:
1. Dining Room – Make the table the brightest spot in the room. This is a wonderful opportunity to use a statement fixture – like that wow-factor chandelier you fell in love with (keeping in mind it accents the overall style of the room). In other spaces, add some mood lighting with a pair of table lamps on the buffet or a pair of matching sconces on the wall.
2. Living Room – It is important to have three levels of lighting.
a. High – A chandelier or recessed can lighting
b. Medium – Wall sconces
c. Low – Floor lamps and/or another type of accent lighting
Task lighting is not a necessity in the living room, apart from a reading lamp. Dimmable overhead lighting is best for TV watching.
3. Kitchen – A common mistake in kitchen lighting is to choose one fixture to light the entire space. It is important to think in layers. Use recessed lighting with dimmers for task lighting, stylish pendants for added ambiance, lighting under cabinets for task lighting in hard to light areas, and even accent lighting to display your favorite china collection.
4. Bedroom – The bedroom is a place for relaxation. Warm lighting sets a calming atmosphere. You don’t want to be walking into a spa waiting room, so recessed lighting on dimmers is a great option. Decorative, yet functional lamps on nightstands are a must or, sconces above nightstands for an unexpected look.
5. Bathroom – Along with the necessary overhead light, a pair of sconces flanking the bathroom mirror or a bar light above works great to fill in shadows – especially when it comes to applying makeup. For larger bathrooms, light fixtures can be added above the shower or toilet. A few last words of advice; Do not forget the dimmers they work to evoke a mood, and do not experiment with varying styles. Keep the look and feel of your home flowing from room to room.
Happy lighting!
