5 Accent Pieces You Never Knew You Needed
5 Accent pieces you never knew you needed
There is something so wonderful about home decor—the way different elements can come together to create magic! As a designer, it brings me so much joy adding the final elements to the rooms I work on and seeing them come to life. It doesn’t matter what style, color combination, or furnishing you choose for your home, there are some accent pieces that should just be in every home. The best ones can be used in multiple rooms, serve a purpose, and make a statement. So I’ve pulled together my 5 favorite accent pieces that I believe should be in every home. Trust me, you’re going to want to have these in your home if you don’t already!
Mirrors
Who doesn’t love a good mirror? The power of a mirror in your space can’t be underestimated. One of the main reasons people use mirrors is to increase the impression of space in a room— by simply hanging a mirror you can make a cramped hallway feel bigger, a small bathroom seem spacious. They also amplify the light in a space. If you have a dim, underlit room, simply hang a mirror across from any light source to maximize a room’s light. And of course, mirrors serve a function—they help you from walking out of the house with mustard from your lunch on your cheek! For a bolder—a floor mirror will make a statement.
A Console Table
Whether it is in your bedroom, living room, family room, or entryway, a console table is the accent piece that will change your life! If you’re not sure what I mean by a console table, I think of these as narrow tables that are meant to sit against the wall. They can be simple tabletops, they can have drawers, some even have sliding doors for extra storage. Console tables can go almost anywhere in your home—they make a wonderful catch-all landing point for an entryway but work just as well in the dining room to display a beautiful vase or piece of art. Console tables work well under a television for storage and in an office as the ultimate accent piece. They really are a “go-anywhere” piece that you can work into any space!
A Piece of Art That You Absolutely Love
This might be the most personal, most subjective of all the accent pieces you need in your home—a piece of art that resonates with you. Art brings something so special to your home. It can reveal a lot about you, your personality, interests, likes, and even dislikes. So when you go on your search for art, you really just need to keep one question in mind—do you love it? Let go of thoughts about coordinating with your room because a great piece of art will become the focal point in a room and bring the whole room together. As long as you love it, you’ll be able to move it anywhere in your home and, truly, from home to home if and when you move.
A Great Coffee Table Book
There is something so wonderful about flipping through the pages of a beautifully designed coffee table book. And as an added bonus they add a luxurious flair to your decor! Your coffee table books can be about any topic that inspires or intrigues you—from fashion and travel to design and architecture, the sky’s the limit. When selecting your coffee table books, look for books that are large enough to make a bold statement. Think about color and imagery, too—does the front cover and spine of the book fit into your decor? I can’t say enough about coffee table books. They are practical, beautiful, and can work well all over your home—on a coffee table in the living room, a bookshelf in the office, or even on a console table in the entryway. And really, what’s more fun than picking out a few new, gorgeous books?!
A Stunning Accent Chair
An accent chair is a great way to bring a bit of excitement into any room. And let’s be honest, what room can’t use another place for you to kick your feet up every once in a while? When you’re looking for an accent chair that is going to make a statement, look for something with an interesting shape, an exposed leg, a bright and bold pattern, or some combination of all three! You can find a brand new chair or an antique find that you have reupholstered in new, fun fabric. Whichever chair you land on, I’m sure it’s going to end up being one of your favorite pieces in your home.
